A big day for Newcastle Jets: Ryan Smith gets a double in the win over Sydney
Newcastle Jets coach Nathan Buckley has said Ryan Smith’s double for his side in the game against Sydney on Sunday was a big day in his coaching career.
“He was really sharp in that match and that was a very, very good performance,” Buckley said on Fox Sports on Sunday.
We are so pleased with the performance, especially the double he got tonight.
It’s a big, big performance for the team, really good performance.
He’s played well for us in the past.
I think that’s been a very good development in the way he’s been playing, it’s been encouraging for us to see.
“Buckley was asked if Smith was the most exciting player in the Jets squad for this weekend’s match against the Magpies, the former Cronulla forward said: “He is.
He’s been in that role a long time and he’s still in the best form of his career.
“It was Smith’s second triple in the match, following a first against Sydney in round eight and a second against St George Illawarra in round nine.
Smith’s triple in Round 11 saw him score a hat-trick in the Sydney Grand Final.
The former Stormer scored his second double in round 11, which saw him reach his 200th career try.
Ahead of this weekend, Buckley said Smith’s form was improving and he would continue to keep an eye on his performances.
Bucksley said he was confident Smith would keep improving in the coming months, adding: “I think he’s got the potential to be a really good player.
Hopefully we’re not looking too far ahead at the moment.
He’ll get that right.
“Smith was in the middle of a strong year for the Jets, averaging 30.8 disposals per game for the season.
There are a number of players who are likely to see their 2016 season come to an end at the end of the year, with James Maloney and Nathan Brown set to leave in the off-season.
While Smith’s season was good, he’s set to go down in history as one of the best players to have played his entire career, according to the Newcastle Jets website.
