Congress to hold hearings on ‘toxic’ Trump administration energy policy
The House Energy and Commerce Committee is expected to hold a hearing on “toxic” Trump administration policies on fossil fuels on Tuesday.
The move comes after a report from The Hill on Tuesday said that the Trump administration’s proposed budget includes funding for a new carbon tax, a new cap-and-trade system and a new rule that would allow states to reject carbon credits that are sold to other states for transportation and energy efficiency.

A committee report on the proposal found that the proposed carbon tax would “increase the cost of carbon emissions by approximately 10 percent and require the adoption of a cap-on-trade program, a rule that requires state-by-state cap-exempt bonds, and other policies that would lead to higher energy prices for consumers, businesses and the federal government.”
“The proposed policy would also significantly impact states’ ability to purchase and sell carbon credits for their own use,” the report said.
The report added that the new rule “would likely lead to a decrease in carbon emissions and therefore increase the cost for energy users.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The House GOP’s Energy and Environmental Caucus will hold a special hearing on Tuesday to discuss “toxicity” of the Trump White House’s energy policy, the Republican said in a statement.
